SAT Prep on the iPod

Kaplan Offers SAT Quiz Downloads on iTunes

Do you remember what life was like before the iPod? Your child would come home from school, drop his backpack on the ground, and answer your query of how school went with a simple, “Fine.” With the advent of the iPod, that simple question and answer sequence has gone from an exchange to a process:

You ask the question.

Your student turns down the volume on his glossy black iPod and says, “What?”

You ask again.

Your child responds with a furrowed brow; he pops one of those little white earphones out of his ear and gives you an apologetic smile. “I couldn’t hear you.”

Quite a bit more work to get to the same monosyllabic answer, but it is understandable if you consider the draw of the iPod. Music is a life staple during the teenage years-kids relate to their peers and even their own emotions through music. It’s a way for them to express themselves. By making music personal and portable, the iPod can become central to a teenager communicating with the rest of the world.

If the iPod is a key point of communication, Kaplan has learned to speak the language. In late June, standardized test preparation company Kaplan, Inc. began offering SAT prep quizzes as downloads on iTunes. Your student can now use a fifth generation iPod to take quizzes in each of the three SAT sections: Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. (And yes, students can listen to music while they do it!)

Downloads cost $4.99 each, and include a detailed analysis of each quiz your child takes, tips on the college admissions process, and explanations about the composition of the SAT. They also contain helpful tips on how to approach taking the SAT, and dynamic graphs that will help your child understand which areas he or she needs to work on.

Now if only iTunes had a download to get their rooms clean!

All the best,
Deborah Fox
